Use of psyllium husks for diarrhea and constipation

  • Diarrhea : Reduce the amount of fluid you consume to approximately 1.5 dl (continue fluid intake throughout the day). For acute diarrhea, we recommend taking psyllium husk powder.
  • Constipation : Increase the amount of fluid you take.

Quality Organic or conventional?

It's advisable to buy organically grown psyllium husks . Psyllium comes from India and Pakistan, where different environmental conditions prevail that can affect quality. Organic products can help avoid contamination.

purity

The purity of psyllium products can vary from 85 to 99%.

Anyone purchasing psyllium husks should pay attention to the purity level. Pure psyllium husks contain no other additives or preservatives. Legal requirements also aim to guarantee consumers that psyllium husks do not contain heavy metals or pesticide residues.

In addition, users of psyllium husks should ask the retailer whether the product is GMO-free, another sign of high-quality goods. The origin of psyllium also influences its quality. Psyllium husks from India have a stronger swelling power and a milder flavor than psyllium husks from Europe.

Swelling capacity

Note on swelling capacity: The swelling capacity refers to the swelling volume in ml/g according to the USP method. The higher the purity, the better the swelling properties. The swelling capacity for the unhulled seeds is approximately 11. Premium psyllium husks have a swelling capacity of up to 68 ml/g, while ground husks can even reach 80 ml/g.

Difference between psyllium husks and psyllium husk powder/flour

Psyllium husks contain soluble fiber, which is responsible for their high swelling properties. Psyllium flour has a higher purity and water binding capacity due to the milling process, resulting in a larger swelling volume. Psyllium flour, in a 2.5:1 ratio, is more effective than husks and binds fluids in the small intestine better.

It must therefore be emphasized again that sufficient fluid intake should always be ensured when taking psyllium powder.

Price differences and quality assurance

The price of psyllium husks depends on their purity and origin. All raw materials are regularly tested in the laboratory for contaminants and foreign matter, both during harvest in the country of origin and upon arrival in Germany.

Conclusion

Psyllium powder is a sensible choice for a healthy diet. It is high in fiber, gluten-free, and supports health in a variety of ways, including supporting diets, bowel sluggishness, and regulating acid-base balance.

For chronic constipation or diarrhea. Its ability to bind and excrete harmful substances should not be underestimated.

How do the Aronia powders differ from each other?

Aronia pomace contains the least sugar because the juice is already pressed. However, it also contains more rind and its healthy nutrients.
Powder from the whole fruit is complete, it contains everything, juice and peel.
Freeze-dried powder also contains the whole berry but is dried at sub-zero temperatures and is therefore raw food quality, with all nutrients preserved and still present in the highest possible quantities.

Which Aronia powder should I buy?

Antioxidant capacity of individual fruit components (Oszmianski and Wojdylo 2005)

This study analyzed the variations in antioxidant activity within the individual fruit components. The study determined the differences in antioxidant capacity between the juice, the press residue (pomace), and the whole berry in relation to the dry matter (DM) in the berry. According to this study, the pomace has a much higher phenol content than the juice and the aronia berry as a whole. Due to its good water solubility, the concentration of phenolic acids is higher in the fruit juice than in the pomace. The most abundant polyphenols are proanthocyanidins (PAs), which are predominantly composed of epicatechin. They account for 66% of all polyphenols in aronia. In terms of its antioxidant and anticarcinogenic effects, aronia berries are similar to those of plants used in traditional Chinese medicine.

1kg juice = 1.6kg fresh berries

1kg pomace (3-4% moisture) = 2.4kg fresh pomace after juicing)

1kg freeze-dried = 4.5 – 5 kg fresh berries
