Psyllium for intestinal cleansing
In certain situations, people in various cultures resort to colon cleansing. This promises health benefits, but should be done gently. To ensure the disadvantages are not outweighed, natural remedies are particularly recommended. These include psyllium husks, for example. The seeds contain no chemicals and contribute to gentle bowel movements.
What effect does a colon cleanse have on the human body?
Colon cleansing is a phenomenon that is not only known in Germany but is also practiced in numerous other regions. A wide variety of approaches exist, but they all aim at the same goal: complete bowel emptying. While its effectiveness remains controversial in conventional medicine, naturopathy considers colon cleansing an important process in the body's detoxification therapy. After all, the intestine is responsible for up to 80 percent of a functioning immune system. It is home to around 400 different populations of microorganisms that are of great importance for the immune system and thus for overall health.
This suggests that intestinal infections or other conditions that impair the functioning of microbes lead to symptoms of illness. The deposition of fecal matter on the inner walls of the intestine is a natural process. Increased stress levels or insufficient exercise lead to food residues not being completely eliminated.
This can cause the intestinal flora to become unbalanced: "good" bacteria are displaced by "bad" bacteria. The layers of feces cause the digestive tract to become narrower, forcing the body to invest a lot of energy in cleansing the intestines. This results in permanent intoxication, which manifests itself, for example, in digestive disorders, impure skin, and allergies. During intestinal cleansing, all accumulated feces are removed, and any imbalance can be restored. Patients report an improvement in chronic fatigue, lack of energy, chronic fungal infections, allergies, and food intolerances. A restored immune system reduces susceptibility to recurrence and increases overall well-being.
Why are psyllium seeds good for intestinal cleansing?
All colon cleansing treatments sold in Germany contain psyllium husks. These husks originate from India and are very high in fiber. Their use is typically focused on diarrhea, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome. Psyllium husks swell in the body after ingestion and can thus bind water, which proves useful for regular diarrhea. During colon cleansing, however, the psyllium husks swell in the intestines and can loosen fecal deposits on the intestinal walls. The psyllium husks bind to the husks themselves and are eliminated during the next bowel movement. When psyllium husks come into contact with water, they can be observed expanding within a few minutes.
This property is capable of softening hardened food pulp in the intestines. This allows the effectiveness of the colon cleansing to be regulated. The accompanying diet is crucial here. If this is not adjusted in any way, the effect is usually rather weak. However, if the diet consists of a nutrient-rich and alkaline diet, the effect can be enhanced. The effect is even more intense with fasting. However, the fasting days should be limited and possibly under medical supervision. The same applies to the duration of the colon cleansing. This usually takes a maximum of six weeks.
Each dose taken should always be accompanied by sufficient fluid. Patients should consume at least 1.5 liters of water or tea; milk is not recommended during a colon cleanse because it does not have swelling properties. If fluid intake is not optimally adjusted, the mucous membranes may not be able to expand sufficiently. The intestinal walls may stick together, and the development of intestinal obstruction cannot be ruled out. People who are only allowed to consume a limited amount of fluid, for example, due to kidney problems, should avoid a colon cleanse.
Conclusion: Psyllium is an excellent way to cleanse the intestines
A maximum of 30-40 grams of psyllium husks should be consumed daily. These can be stirred tablespoon by tablespoon into 100 milliliters of water and allowed to swell briefly. The laxative effect is generally delayed. It can take two to three days before the psyllium husks' properties become noticeable.
Psyllium husks are a natural remedy for some ailments. However, treatment should be under medical supervision for certain conditions. This is the case, for example, when taken concurrently with certain medications. Some ingredients in psyllium husks may prevent the active ingredients from being optimally absorbed during a colon cleanse. If patients have previously experienced intestinal obstructions, acute inflammation of the stomach or intestines, or if they have narrowing of the esophagus, intestines, or stomach, a colon cleanse is not recommended. Therefore, medical advice should be sought before beginning such a cleanse.
